Solution User:
As one of the oldest fire departments in Middlesex County, the Perth Amboy Fire Department provides fire protection and other emergency services for the city of Perth Amboy, NJ.
The department is comprised of a career division of 56 full time firefighters as well as a volunteer division of over 60 active members.
Problem:
The City of Perth Amboy volunteer fire fighters are paid a yearly stipend (salary) based on a point system. For every alarm, drill, meeting, and training session the volunteer receives a point or points towards the collective stipend.
The collection and input of point data has been an arduous monthly manual effort for each department that partakes in the stipend program. This effort took hours per month to coordinate, enter and calculate. It was prone to typing errors, hand written mistakes and lost documentation.
Solution:
The solution to Perth Amboy Fire Department’s problem consists of the Flic Laser Bar Code Scanner and Symbology Enterprises Inc. SPARK software.
Each volunteer is given a bar coded identification card. Using the Flic Laser Bar Code Scanner operating in batch mode, each volunteer that is present at the event is scanned. The Flic scanners are then placed in a cradle and the scanned data is automatically loaded into the SPARK system. SPARK then tracks the incident by time, date, location, supervisor and which volunteers were present.
Outcome:
"Using the Flic Scanner and the SPARK software allows administration to keep track of stipend and percentages while virtually eliminating all manual entry effort", said Shaun McInerney of Symbology Enterprises. "A data entry process that used to take up to 8 hours a month now takes us just minutes."
